Google Experiments Colorful Checkout Badges
Google search result advertisers who sell products through Googles Checkout program get the special benefit of having a visible icon next to their ad (Your AdWords ads will stand out, as Google says
). This could be an incentive for sellers to use Checkout, as the Checkout program has been struggling in the past (judging from e.g. Googles extensions of free usage
for sellers). Now, Google has been seen experimenting with an even more colorful version
of the Checkout badge, which in this case is placed in a pet food ad and reads $5 off!. Its getting kinda cheap. The pet food, I mean.

Yahoo Buzz Is Quite Delicious
As Stephen Wilson tells us, Yahoo Buzz is now open to everyone. Yahoo Buzz is a way of telling the world about websites that have particularly delighted you and the Buzz Log gives added visibility to Whats hot on Yahoo! Buzz.![]() |
| Buzz Is Quite Delicious |
Yahoo Buzz is a site where you can vote in a similar way to Digg
, although it is likely that there will be more editorial control.
As Darren Rowse explains
, Yahoo Buzz will appeal to a certain type of audience and reader and will therefore present different opportunities to different publishers.
The burgeoning expansion of social media websites is almost head spinning. Another popular website with some similarities is del.icio.us or as it has recently been transformed into delicious.com
. The delicious blog provides some explanations
:
Oh happy day " the new Delicious is here
The new Delicious
Over the past few days weve been transitioning Delicious over to our new platform, quietly starting with RSS feeds and APIs. Today were taking the final step and flipping the switch on the new web site: delicious.com.The new Delicious is just like the old del.icio.us, only faster, easier to learn, and hopefully more delightful to use and to look at.
Its even more head spinning when you realize that both Yahoo Buzz and delicious are owned by Yahoo. As Michael Porter so wisely said
, Of course strategy is hard - its about making tough choices. If Yahoo cannot make up its mind, how are we, the poor consumers, to do so.

Google Experimenting to Provide a Better Experience
Ben Gomes over at the Google Blog posted about how Google continuously runs experiments on its results pages in order to further enhance the experience of users.Gomes wrote that Google runs anywhere from 50-200 experiments on Google sites across the world. The interesting part of the post is the examples of past experiments that Google has run where the experiments are so subtle that it's very difficult to notice the difference between A and B.
Below is one example that Ben Gomes provides, can you spot the difference?

CommentsIn this case, the difference in user interaction is so clear and marked we could tell extremely quickly which one worked better: the difference is in the thickness of the plus box next to the stock quote. Now, coming to the conclusion that one is "better" is tricky, and there's many a possible slip on the way there. Does more interaction with the plus box mean that it is better? How about if users then miss good results because they are distracted by the more prominent plus box? If we've done our job right, almost without your noticing, things will work just that little bit better for you.

Google Opens AdSense Ad Manager To All!
Google launched the free platform 'AdManager', designed specifically for small and medium-sized publishers. AdManager was only available to a handful who were testing its Beta phase. Now, via the Google Inside AdSense Blog
, Google has announced that the Google Ad Manager service is now open to all AdSense publishers. According to Google, Ad Manager can help you sell, schedule, deliver, and measure both directly-sold and network-based inventory. It offers an intuitive and simple user interface, Google serving speed and reliability, and significant cost savings. Furthermore, Google Ad Manager is optional for publishers and can be implemented in their AdSense accounts, that would provide them with automated means of maximizing the revenue of their unsold and network-managed inventory.
The new features that have been employed in Google AdManager are:
- Interface available in 32 languages: Do you prefer to work in Turkish or Vietnamese or Hungarian? Now you can! Ad Manager supports international currencies, too.
- Ad network management: Easily manage your third-party ad networks in Ad Manager to automatically maximize your network driven revenue.
- Automatic macro insertion: Save time and avoid tagging errors since Ad Manager now automatically detects and inserts macros from most popular 3rd party vendors.
- Creative preview on live site: Preview the look and feel of ads on your live site to ensure ads look as expected before you start the campaign.
- Day and Time Targeting: Don't want your orders to run on weekends? No problem. With day and time targeting, you can set any new line items you create to run only during specific hours or days, or as little as 15 minutes per week. Use day and time targeting in addition to geography, bandwidth, browser, user language, operating system, domain and custom targeting.

Ask.com Re-Launches AskKids
Ask.com has re-launched their search engine for kids at www.AskKids.com. School is now back in session, so now is great time for kids to start using this new search engine.Whats important for me, as a parent of an 8 year old in third grade and a two year old is that the search engine they use is a safe one. But it needs to be a search engine that kids want to use. Ask Kids gives kids a great search experience. After using it a few times this morning, I can see that it has more relevant, kid-friendly search results than any other search engine. And the search results are presented is an interesting, pleasing, graphically-vivid display"better than any other search engine. In fact, it makes Google
look sort of bland.
Whats great about this new kids search engine is that its more click friendly than type friendly. If you have kids and youve ever watched them use a search engine to find something, youll know that kids are not very good at typing. In fact, theyre terrible at typing. But, even my 2 year old can use a mouse. According to Ask.com, the Ask Kids search engine was built with this in mind: you dont have to type that much in order to get good search results. Lets take a look at the search results.

I did a search for the word Texas
at Ask Kids to see what would find. Right there, front and center, you get the stats for Texas:
Governor: Rick Perry (R)
Capital: Austin; Population: 22,490,022
Statehood: December 29, 1845 - 28th state admitted
Nickname: Lone Star State; Motto: Friendship
State Bird: Mockingbird; Flower: Bluebonnet; Tree: Pecan
State Song: Texas, Our Texas
Whats also good is that there are many places to click: you dont have to actually type again to find what youre looking for. You can click on over to the official State of Texas website, you can look at images on the right, and you can even narrow or expand your search with related phrases. And, best of all, you can find out the time in Texas as well as the temperature in Austin, Texas.
Whats also interesting to me, though, is that Ask Kids has sponsored search results right in the middle of the screen, right below the stats for Texas:

I know Ask.com needs to monetize their search engine, but to put up sponsored results right there in the front and center like this? Do you really think that kids have the ability to support those sponsors? It just seems kind of odd to me that contextual ads (they appear to be from Google AdWords?
) would be so prominent in the search results. I would expect banner ads
to be there, not contextual ads.
Just as a test, I went ahead and searched for some keyword phrases that might bring up some controversial search results, just to see really if this all-new Ask Kids search engine is more kid friendly like they say it is. I searched for viagra
. Do it yourself and tell me that this search result is kid friendly:

Should AskKids.com, supposedly the best kid friendly search engine show sponsored ads for Viagra? I realize that many kids will probably not be searching for Viagra at AskKids.com. But what about their actual search results. Are their organic, natural search results even on-topic for the keyword phrase that I searched for, Viagra? The number one search result for this search phrase
is Nature.com. How ironic!

Search Engine Tool Faceoff
Yahoo! has unveiled the new and improved version of Yahoo! Site Explorer. Site Explorer is an invaluable tool, "providing site owners with better visibility into how we -Yahoo!- index their websites and what data we use in our search service". As Priyank Garg from Yahoo! Search explains in the release post:![]() |
| Search Engine Tool Faceoff |
"We launched a new look and feel for Site Explorer http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/new) that provides a more dynamic interface to accommodate future feature roll-outs. The new interface also includes a new Site Summary page to provide statistics for authenticated sites. On top of this, we're also increasing the number of rules for Dynamic URL Rewriting that you can enter from 3 to 10".Google has a similar service for webmasters, known as Google Webmaster Tools. We've encouraged all our readers to embrace the Google Webmaster tools for as long as they've been available, as they provide great insights for people concerned with their Google organic listing.
Which set of webmaster tools provides the greatest value to site owners? In reality, both services are valuable additions to your SEO efforts. Here's a quick run-down on the information each set of webmaster tools offers:
With Yahoo! Site Explorer
you can:- Find out which of your site's web pages are indexed by Yahoo!.
- Discover and track what websites link to your site.
- Know what subdomains from your site are known to Yahoo!.
- Monitor and manage the feeds you have submitted for that site.
- See when the data was last refreshed by our crawlers.
- Resubmit the feed to let us know that it has been updated.
- Download all 1000 results into a tab-separated value (TSV) file at once (and avoid having to page through the results.)
- Learn additional metadata about the URLs from your site in the Yahoo! index, such as language.
- Delete URLs that you don't want indexed by Yahoo! Search.
- Re-write dynamic URLs to make them easier to index
- Report SPAM.
The Google Webmaster Tools
let you:- Know which of your web pages are indexed in Google
- Uncover which websites are linking to your website (limited view)
- Understand what text is used when linking to your site
- Validate robots.txt files
- Submit and monitor your sites feeds (incl. Subscriber numbers)
- Register and update your websites sitemap
- Understand the top organic queries for your website
- Work out where you feature in the top search results
- Find out when your site was last indexed by the Google crawler
- Understand issues that Google has uncovered on your site
- PLUS...much more
Ideally, you should track your site in both, but if forced to recommend just one - I still feel that Google provides the better insights of the two (except for inbound link numbers). If you haven't checked them out yet, I recommend going site exploring now, if no other reason, to marvel at the information available for FREE!

Google Improves Optimizer Features
Google have enhanced their website optimizer to allow advertisers to disable low performing ad variations and send the remaining traffic to higher performing ones.Previously, to achieve this, advertisers would have to stop the entire test (and lose all test data), so the improvement is a big timesaver for webmasters.
In case you're unfamiliar with Google website optimizer, it's a tool that allows advertisers
to test copy, layout, and images to determine which combination will yield the best results on any given page. To learn more, visit the website optimizer demo
.
As mentioned above, website optimizer now features a 'disable' button that removes any low performing page variations and allows for quicker, more actionable test results. Google have also made some other enhancements including:
- Updated reporting to indicate when a variation is a high confidence winner. High confidence winners are page combinations that are the most likely to improve conversion over your current page design (see screenshot below).
- Offline validation for A/B tests - ensures webmasters have everything tagged correctly for pages that aren't accessible to website optimizer online.
These updates were released by the Google team at Search Engine Strategies conference in San Jose last week. I think they're a great example of how some simple changes can really improve a service offering. If you're using website optimizer and noticed the changes, let us know what you think!

Google Blocks Automated Rank Checking
Google has been threateninger, promising to block rank-checking software such as WebPosition for years, and even mentions them by name in their webmaster guidelines. It seems like Google has finally decided to honor its promise and block the software.
I was last able to check rankings on August 22. Since then, nada. A quick survey around the Web and it sounds like a lot of other people found their automated ranking checks were blocked on August 1, August 5 or August 7.
What does this mean for SEO? Quite a lotand amazingly little.
It means that we cannot check dozens of keywords quickly and painlessly. Manually checking 50 search phrases for, lets say, a dozen clients, often going onto the second or third page of Google meanslets see1200 manual searches. Suppose there are two dozen clients. Suppose there are 100 search terms. You can do the math and see how time consuming this would be.
However, let us for a moment suppose that we dont do 1200 manual searches every month. Suppose instead we do occasional searches to see where a client stands for a few major search phrases? Or we check different searches on different months as we focus the campaign on different sub-niches? What if we invest more effort in building rankings than in measuring them?
Yes, we do need to measure. We need to know if we are moving forward. We need to be able to show clients roughly the magnitude of the progress. But perhaps we will be using a smaller basket of keywords and letting the long tail take care of itself.
For me, the main use of rank-checking across a broad range of search phrases was to determine which search phrases or family of search phrases need more focus as we ride the surf of algorithm changes, renewed competition and other happenings.
Of course, clients also require reportingwhich we will no longer be able to do to the same level as we had been doing. So the immediate effect is that over the next month or so, I need to budget a few hours to explain to clients why lists of ranking positions can no longer be the way to measure progress.

Google Translation Onebox
Google has a new direct result showing translations, triggered for certain queries. Here are some examples: * -translate Hello into French- - Google offers the translation "all, bonjour".- -translate Einkommensteuer- - Einkommensteuer is a German word meaning income tax. As the target language was omitted, Google translates to English. Instead of the short translation Google finds a longer phrase in its dictionary and presents the English text their joint assessment for income tax.
- -translate glasses into German- - glasses are an ambiguous term; Google finds two translations but doesnt use the shortest words in their translation (e.g. they show Lesebrille " reading glasses " instead of just Brille).
- -translate friend into Chinese- - Instead of just showing , Google prints the text ...;, ()" as translation. Similarly, entering -translate hello into Chinese- results in much more than just the appropriate word.
Here are two sample queries which specifically do not trigger the onebox:
- -translate Pferd into Italian- - here Im using the German word Pferd " horse " to see if I can do an instant translation into Italian, but this isnt possible; no onebox shows up for this query. The query -translate Pferd from German into Italian- does not work either.
- -translate Hallo into English- - this query does not work either due to the use of quotes (Google only shows a spelling correction suggestion, asking Did you mean: translate Hello into English).
All in all such a translation onebox if done right would be an incredibly helpful feature. Im currently using a Firefox search box connected to Leo.org for English to German translations, and Im referring to it quite frequently. However, the quality of the translation onebox by Google is surprisingly bad... it just doesnt always find the most appropriate words to look up in the dictionary. Even if wed assume the translator would be right 70% of the time, it would still be almost useless because if you dont speak the language you also cant easily verify whether or not youve hit on one of those 30% bad results.

Google Suggest To Become Default, Google Says
Google just announced
they will start to roll out Google Suggest
as a default feature for the Google.com homepage over the next week. For instance, when you enter presid with Suggest, below the search box choices like presidential polls, presidential election and more will pop up, to be selected and then searched for using e.g. the arrow and return keys.
Already, besides the Google Labs experiment which started in 2004
, auto-complete features are available on the homepage of Google China
*. As Ive never been a regular user of Google Suggest Im curious if that feature will be useful or annoying in the long run during daily usage. Google is convinced that it 1) helps formulate queries, 2) reduces spelling errors, and 3) saves keystrokes.

Microsoft's Powerset to Revolutionize Search
We first let you in on the news of Microsoft buying Powerset back at the beginning of July, but it now seems that Microsoft has big plans to use Powerset technology to improve advertising in search results and in the process, change the way advertising is done.![]() |
| Revolutionize Search |
Currently, advertisers bid to have their ads shown on search results pages depending upon specific keywords that users type into search engines. But Powerset believes that its natural language processing could change the way ads are displayed and enhance the profitability for all parties involved.
"If people aren't bidding on keywords, and are bidding on concepts, it could completely change the ball game," said Scott Prevost, Powerset's General Manager and Product Director.
However, not everyone is a fan of this new natural language search process. This includes Don Reisinger from Mashable. Here is why Don believes natural language search will not work.
Trying to guess what people will say, as opposed to what people will include in their query, is extremely difficult. Why try to guess a whole sentence or a structured query when you can pick one word and hope people use it?"
What are your thoughts on this, do you think there is a future in search for natural language processing?

Rapid Title Changes Can Hurt Your Google Rankings?
According to Webmaster World, in the hope of getting better rankings, a lot of Webmasters changes the title tags of their pages and started implementing more search engine friendly tags. However, this effort seems to be backfiring for some. Webmasters are facing rank drops. This can also be related to the Google SERP & Algo Update
that we had reported about at the beginning of this month. It does seem that Google is still ain't over with the SERP update, as we have discussed in our post last week, about the website rankings going bonkers
. Some Webmasters are even suggesting that over the time, Google has become extremely "cranky" about title changes.
Here are some excerpts from the Webmaster World Thread:
"Past two days have shown a 65%+ decrease in traffic, we have around 250 pages. Last week I went through about 60 of them and adjusted the title tags to something I thought would be more appropriate. e.g. from:
'CompanyName - Get your keyword1, keyword2, keyword3 & keyword4 Quote Now from Company Name'
to
'CompanyName.com Company Name Keyword1 & Keyword2 Quotes'
as the extra two keywords were not really traffic pullers so I wanted to highlight our better offers. For this sort of change we lost rankings for "CompanyName Keyword1" and "Company Name Keyword1". Alternatively, all I did was rearrange the order e.g. from:
Company Name Keyword1 & Keyword2's at CompanyName.com'
to
'CompanyName.com Keyword1 & Keyword2's from Company Name'
If it has just mainly been the first example that was dropping I would assume I had done something like lost "synonym value" or tripped one of the many theorised "Over-Optimization Filters".
But as simply the order changed on the majority am I safe to assume that this is just some sort of Trust-Rank loss due to a large portion of my titles having changed suddenly? Should I see my rankings come back in a few weeks once a Google update has passed and my titles appear fixed/static/steady?"
"I've been warning of this for some time.
Unless you are a super trusted authority site (ie you can throw up a page on a long tail and rank Top 3 in an hour), then Google is very cranky about title changes lately.
I absolutely can not guarantee the new titles will come back
You might want to test ONE. and change the others back to their original titles, to see how that ONE page performs.
And THEN slowly switch others while keeping track of the time-frame that the original page (if successful) regained its rankings."I've also noticed this. Some of the sites I work with are of the "big boy" variety, and they can shift titles around with no obvious problems. Other sites are more of the "adventurous entrepreneuer" variety - and they pretty much have to get it right the first time. Google is not like Infoseek - where the little guy could get involved with a string of tweaks just to see how the algo responded.
I've also seen other elements beyond the title tag get more sensitive to changes:
1. A site was launched with a link to the domain root for the logo at the top of the page - the alt attribute was just the company name. Months later, they added a couple extra keywords to that alt attribute sitewide, and all those keyword searches went south. And yet a site of a similar size had keywords in the logo's alt element at launch and they had no trouble ranking.
2. I've seen a similar effect with links in the footer. You can launch with a reasonable batch of footer links, especially internal links, and not have trouble. But if you mess around with those links after launch you can be courting trouble unless you're a big name site.
We've known for several years that Google watches a site's history. Looks like their watching even more closely for signs of what they feel is over-optimization"
"That's the impression I'm getting. The theory being that only an SEO would be making changes to the title/alt/etc tags 6 months after the site has been launched/indexed/ranked?
Such would seem to be a direct penalty for performing SEO work rather than any actual Search Relevancy Filter though. Change occurs to correct errors and direct targeting better that's good for search engine results isn't it? Ah! Never thought of that. Of course, that means a second change and so far in this thread the concensus is that the first change was bad enough
If they didn't like the title tag change, they're going to hate the huge sitewide design overhaul that's going to occur next week. That will make the site much better too for our users so Google will probably drop us another 100 places because of course, everything we do is all about Google, right? Not our users."
"Hello allfor what it's worth.my site has been up for about a year and a half (very competitive category) and I have not been doing full optimization until the last two months or soI'm seeing decent results as I've been adding pages lately.I added about twenty pages for long tail keywords along the same seo theory and didn't get the best placementI then went in and adjusted my title tags and noticed a drop on my next spidering.which has been about once a week.I left it alone and added more pages.i noticed last night my rankings have rebounded FOR THE BETTERNOW these ARE NOT that competitive terms but may provide a little insight."
"I don't consider removing 2-3 words or re-arranging the order slightly to be "radical". Changing "Home Loan Quotes" to "Soup Kitchen Vouchers" is radical.
When the words are the same then re-arranging them and dropping from #1 to #214 seems more like a penalty than a natural result of any change."
"I agree with your meaning. BNut for the sake of webmasters everywhere, now and in the future, I want to get picky about words. It's RANKING that drops, not page rank. Page Rank is only influenced by links. Let's all work to lower the confusion ;)"
"Get it right the first time is more important now that ever. I'd prefer to delete a page and use a redirect or just create a new page at a new address than tamper with existing titles.
The issue for Google may not be word order as much as the fact titles were changed. Last year I changed the titles across an entire site of over 1,000 pages. It has since rebounded but was in the 950 tank for months. (May or may not be related to title changes.) The pages unaffected had very solid and very many internal links.
Google once had a problem with overoptimization. Now it looks sometimes as if it just has a problem with optimization. The best time to optimize is at the time of original creation. Do it once. Do it right."

Another Google Update: AdWords Quality Score
First Google updated the PageRank toolbar, then a Google ranking update and now they have announced the implementation of some improvements to AdWords. The improvements center around Quality Score, and is based on the feedback that users and advertisers have provided.
Here are the 3 main improvements that Google will implement.
- Quality Score will now be more accurate
Quality Score will now be calculated at the time of each search query. This way, AdWords will use the most accurate, specific, and up-to-date performance information when determining whether an ad should be displayed. Your ads will be more likely to show when they're relevant and less likely to show when they're not.
- Keywords will no longer be marked 'inactive for search'
All keywords will have the chance to show ads on Google web search and the search network (unless you've paused or deleted them). Keep in mind, however, that keywords previously marked 'inactive for search' are not likely to accrue a great deal of traffic following this change.
- 'First page bid' will replace 'minimum bid' in your account
Google is replacing minimum bids with a new, more meaningful metric: first page bids. First page bids are an estimate of the bid it would take for your ad to reach the first page of search results on Google web search.
If you would like to learn more about these improvements, click here
or visit Google frequently asked questions
specifically for these improvements.

Google Can't Keep Up With Feedburner AdSense
Saying "I told you so" often smacks of smugness, but it appears we were right
about Googles decision to make the AdSense for Feeds migration a manual process
.
CommentsGoogle will soon provide a self-service process to migrate from an account on the original FeedBurner website to a Google Account. We have temporarily paused processing of new manual migration requests; we are working doggedly through the initial queue of requests and will re-open account migration services as soon as the first batch is completed.
(If you have already submitted a migration request, please look for an email response from Google once your migration has completed).
